Who Needs Inlays or Onlays?
Our dentists will often recommend an inlay or onlay if over ½ of your tooth’s biting surface is broken or non-functional.
What Are Inlays and Onlays
Inlays and onlays are essentially fillings made of gold, composite resin, or more frequently, porcelain. Porcelain is the material of choice usually due to its strength and the ability to closely match the patients tooth color. Dr. Colson will determine which is best for you, inlays or onlays, based on the amount of tooth decay. For less severe cases inlays are used, for more substantial reconstruction onlays (sometimes called partial crowns) will be used. When the damage to the tooth is not severe to warrant an entire crown, onlays are used.
The Procedure for Inlays and Onlays
Due to the extent of work being done two appointments are necessary for inlays and onlays. The first appointment entails removing all decaying matter or damaged tooth from the area. The tooth is prepared for the inlay or onlay and an impression is taken and sent to the lab to be constructed. Dr. Colson will protect the area with a temporary sealant and our staff will schedule your second appointment.
Upon return to our office in Raleigh, Dr. Colson will remove the temporary sealant and ensure the new inlay or onlay fit properly. When the fit is perfectly sculpted, it will then be bonded to the tooth and polished to perfection.
Inlays and onlays can increase the strength of the tooth by up to 75% while traditional fillings can decrease the strength by 50%. Because inlays and onlays are bonded to teeth with high-strength resins they have a lasting life of 10 to 30 years.
